Charlie Chaplin was born in London England to Charles Spencer Chaplin, Sr., a vocalist and actor and Hannah Chaplin, a singer and actress. His parents separated when Charlie was only three years old. He lived with his mentally disturbed mother, moving quite often until she was sent to an asylum. Charlie lived for a brief time with his alcoholic father and half brother until they were sent away to a boys’ school. Orphaned at the age of twelve, Charlie lived in a school for paupers. In 1903 he landed the role of Billy the Pageboy in Sherlock Holmes, thus beginning his brilliant career as a great silent film comedian actor, a composer, producer and director.
